Have you been impacted by the falling number of apprenticeship starts?

A recent study conducted by IFF research on behalf of the Department for Education has confirmed that the number of level 2 and level 3 apprenticeship starts has been falling steadily since the 2016/2017 academic year, before being hit with rapid decline in May 2020.

Have you been impacted by the falling number of apprenticeship starts?

According to Department for Education data, there were 22,300 starts in May 2019 but this dropped to just 9,000 only 12 months later, likely caused by the impact of Covid-19. Young people appear to be the hardest hit as starts for those aged 16 to 18 have fallen 79 per cent, from 2,900 to 600 in the same period. Starts on level 2 apprenticeships have also fallen more than any other level – from 8,000 in May 2019 to 2,100, a 74 per cent decrease, in May 2020.

The report identifies staffing costs; the administrative burden associated with apprenticeship delivery; and the additional requirement to provide and evidence the 20 per cent Off The Job (OTJ) training as some of the major obstacles faced by both training providers and employers.

Rubitek doesn’t claim to be an instant solution to all of the issues highlighted in this report. Neither can it solve the many socio-economic challenges we are now facing. But what Rubitek does provide, is an intelligent, intuitive and innovative apprentice management platform, that simplifies delivery of apprenticeship programmes and engages all stakeholders to improve qualification achievement rates for apprentices and other work-based learners.
